Bio
information

Name: Derek Luk / Luk Yin-Cho
Nickname: None.
Age: 33.
Date of Birth: July 2, 1965.
Zodiac: Cancer.
Eyes: Brown.
Hair: Black.
Religion: Buddhism.
Affiliation: Neutral.
Abilities: With some concentration, he can pull a long sword from his hand. It’s always sharp and it never retains any marks from previous times of him bringing it out. If he drops it, it instantly dematerializes. He can only use it for a few hours at a time, but he rarely needs it for that long. If he’s sick, has a headache, or is distracted, he can’t focus his mind well enough to pull the sword out

personality

Loyal, diligent, hardworking, and faithful. Derek is the type of person that makes himself easy to trust, and most of it is because that’s who he really is. He’s the type of man that would make a good father and husband, often making sure to put himself on the line for other people instead of thinking of himself first. If someone tells him a secret, he’ll keep it to himself. If he tells someone he likes them, he’s rarely lying, as he doesn’t want to mislead someone. He’s certainly not the type of person that would be pinned as being an assassin for a large mafia. He’s certainly not the type of person who would kill without thinking twice, taking the orders from someone else. But it’s what he does.

As an assassin, Derek often forces himself to separate his mind from what he does. Much like the theory behind the scientists who partook in the experiments in the holocaust, he almost performs a doubling action that allows him the ability to slice open another man’s throat with a blade and then walk away and chase after a woman he believes he’s in love with. Derek believes that he doesn’t allow these murders to affect him, but he occasionally dreams about them. Every death haunts him in some way. Scents, facial expressions, clothing, shoes—he rarely keeps the same articles of clothing after an assassination, if only because he doesn’t want to be reminded of that moment. His father did the same thing and even recommended this, but there’s a certain sense of urgency in his actions. While he’s an amazing assassin and does it without question, he often has moments where he feels like he may be about to have identity crises. His father told him to never lose his humanity. That’s not something he’s ever had to think twice about.

Outside of his loyalty and diligence, Derek is a seemingly nice person. He’ll help someone pick up their books if they drop them, but he’s occasionally too self-involved to bother. If he makes a friend, he’s persistent about it and often the first person to initiate it. In acts of love, he’s the first person to confess his love and the last person to get over the romance. This has been with him since his first girlfriend at the age of fourteen and it holds true with Abigail. Even when in prison, he never thought of looking at another woman when he got out. She would be the only woman for him, even if she would never take him back. He has a sense of humor that’s a little corny. When he laughs, he gets loud, and he’s often the type of person to find the wrong thing funny but often knows how to ease tension. His role in the 14K makes him one of the shadier members, but he still made friends quite easily while he worked with the organization. He didn’t know Matthew that well, but he still remained faithful to the man. When it was Matthew’s birthday, Matthew’s father’s birthday, or even Vienne’s, he often made sure to buy them birthday presents (even if he doubted they needed gifts). In his ice cream shop, he would always give little kids free ice cream if they didn’t have the right amount of money. A good person, if it weren’t for his other life.

He gets angry only rarely, as control is often a very important part of his life. If Derek finds himself doing that, he’ll go spar or shoot a gun to get his head in order. His jail time has tore at his resolve a little and made him a little more on edge, but he still has the capacity to count to ten before he acts. He doesn’t like rushing into a situation and he’s strangely not the type to jump in front of a bullet for someone. But if he realizes the problem of that bullet, he’ll kill the person who pulled the trigger not long afterward.

appearance

Derek has always been attractive. He has black hair, dark eyes and solemn features that might make him look a little scarier than he really is. When he smiles, it’s always awkward, and he always looks a little friendlier in the process. Before his prison time, he used to wear his hair longer and in a pony tail, but after prison, he wears it shorter with the dark strands of hair falling haphazardly into his eyes. He gets very little sleep now and often looks as if he hasn’t rested. He’s always been fond of only a few hours of sleep every night, but he gets even less now that he’s spent six years in prison and has had six years to dwell on his position in the world. He wears conservative clothing while on a job, but errs more toward casual clothing when not at work.

history

The Luk family always held ties to 14K, even if they never had much of a role in leading it. Derek’s father, Julian, was a man who killed for 14K and therefore, Matthew Tong’s parents. He was a very loyal man who was paid well and had shares in a number of companies. His cover story was that he owned and ran one of Matthew’s restaurants. He did, in fact, but somewhat distantly—it was only to make him look like a good responsible man. Derek would grow up to “sell” the restaurant at the age of twenty and would “buy”—or run—a small ice cream shop. It was a simple, innocent life, with the exception of the occasional kills. His family always had the ability to pull the sword out. Throughout history, there have been a number of famous individuals in the family, warriors who gained great fame because of their abilities with the sword. It would only make sense that this would continue into the twentieth century, even if they switched from honorable sorts who were independent to those who would serve others (but perhaps, even as warriors, they always served others, even in a lesser sense).

Derek grew up around 14K, always aware of what he would end up doing in his future. His father trained him. He was trained to be an assassin, ruthless and uncaring about those the Tongs would order him to kill. He learned to fight—hand to hand combat. He learned to lie, to speak a number of languages, and how to manipulate people. It was all necessary if he was ever caught. If he would be a useful tool for Matthew Tong, he would have to be a perfect one. But Derek, like his father, and like his grandfather, would never lose his humanity. His father believed it was important to never become a sociopath, as it kept him grounded. It made him feel loyalty and it made him understand that sometimes, what Matthew did was wrong, and sometimes, what he would do would be wrong, but it was who they were for the whole of their lives. And his father always warned him that if he lost that humanity, he may go off the edge and they would have to find a replacement. There were replacements waiting. Derek had a younger brother, Ian, and even a sister. He vowed to never make them necessary.

As a member of the 14K, he did his jobs with ease and rarely found himself caught. At the age of twenty-two, three years into taking over for his father, he met a woman while on a job. He had to kill one of the associates with a casino that threatened to turn in the 14K. After completing his job, he saw the attractive blonde woman and found himself immediately taken. Thoughts of “love at first sight” rushed through his mind as he bothered her over the course of the evening, trying to catch her attention, and doing everything possible to keep her eyes on him. When she finally agreed to dinner with him, he thought to tell her that she would fall in love with him before long, but he decided to show her instead. Dinner the next night went terrifically, and it wasn’t long before the two were dating regularly. Derek was right; he was in love with her almost immediately.

They were together for a while. He learned of her place in the police force and he was warned that if he went down because of his relationship with her, he would go down alone. Derek never cared about who she was as an officer, but he never told her about his role in 14K. Even if he knew everything to help the force, he never told her a word. It was a part of his life—killing people, helping Matthew—but he also had his ice cream shop. During his time with Abigail, he became more involved with his ice cream shop and it became a passion of his. Perhaps it helped him lie to himself more, perhaps he was beginning to wonder if Ian wanted to take his role with Matthew. He never entertained any of the thoughts for more than a second, as he carried his life—all parts of it—fairly well.

Until he was arrested.

He felt betrayed. The woman he loved more than anything, the woman that almost pushed him to giving up his honor and his loyalty—she turned him in. It hurt more than knowing that he might be killed instantly upon getting out of prison. But he never told the police force anything, and it was that reason that he never got more time in prison. Few deaths could be connected to him, and even then, they had no evidence, no fingerprints, and certainly no weapon. His business was properly owned. He had a few issues with fraud and assisted a few well-known operations, but there was never any proof of his murderous lifestyle. The police had reason to believe that it was another part of him, but they never knew for certain. Derek hated that she would know about that reason. Derek hated that she came to believe that he might not love her.

So when she came to ask him about it, he told her the truth. “Always and forever.” He would love her for the rest of his life, as he couldn’t imagine himself with anyone else. But if she believed he was dishonest, he may not be able to change her mind. And if he got out, he would likely become involved with the 14K again. If they allowed him. He was loyal—to her and to him—but he would have six years to figure out who was more important.

Six years is now up and he’s thought about her every day. But he’s also remembered his friends and his upbringing. Both of them are very important to him and he now has to figure out where he must go. Choosing one can lead to his death; the other can lead to happiness, even for a brief while. Derek doesn’t know if he can strike a balance between the two.
